Technology can be an exciting, shiny, engaging tool for learners. It feels relevant. It is naturally something many want to put time into through play and exploration. Audio tools have the potential to create new tasks for students that would not be possible otherwise. It can provide an outlet for students who are not comfortable presenting in front of others to share, and can provide some students who have a lot to say to say it, and have an audience. While many of the audio tools can just be used to record, some of them also allow for a lot of creativity in how the sounds and voices can be arranged. The audio can overlay a presentation or a video, really engaging the students' ability to choose how they want to share their information.
Because the audio tools available now are so diverse, many different learners may find tools that they prefer.

What problems might technology help to solve that can't be solved in more conventional/cheaper ways? And why not? What are limitations of addressing these issues via tech?
A problem that technology might help is with the writing process. This process normally involves brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing and the final product. I believe the most difficult step is the beginning , the brainstorming. Students can have a hard time figuring out where to start or what to write about and it can be even harder if the student is very self conscious of their writing. With audio recording, students who struggle with writing can focus more on the creative aspect and get their ideas out more easily than agonizing over spelling and grammar errors. Along with brainstorming, it could be easier for children to find their voice when hearing themselves read out loud what they have written. Hearing a recording of themselves can help them find their voice and redefine their voice in their writing. When listening, they can also find where there could be making writing mistakes. Writing a story compared to listening to a story being read can completely change one’s perspective of their own story and provide better insight to how other’s could perceive the story. Some limitations to addressing these issues with tech could definitely be the access to the tools to audio record one self, properly teaching the students to learn how to use the audio and teachers knowing how to use the audio tools and knowing how to properly teach it/integrate it in the curriculum. But with how technology has progressed/is progressing some of these limitations have become less limiting. Schools have been increasingly getting more access to technology and tech like audio has become more accessible through free websites and apps like Chirbit and Audio Recorder Pro. Though even with tech being more accessible, the training and education for teachers to utilize the tech to it’s full potential isn’t there. |
